There’s been a lot of discussion lately about Cradle Catholicism versus converted catholics and as someone who grew up having holy water thrown at her anytime I was about to leave the house here’s the main points we adhere to when raised catholic:
1. You never go straight to God or Jesus with your problem. You must instead find the saint that deals with that issue and annoy them – St Anthony if you lost something, St Christopher if you’re lost, St Jude if you’re a lost cause.
2. Always feel a little bit guilty even if you haven’t done anything wrong and don’t even get the notion into your head about feeling pride , who do you think ye are like?
3. Even though Jesus is the main man of the religion we’ll always vibe a bit more with Mary
4. Regardless of whether or not you still feel religious you will still put a Child of Prague in the window for good weather (bonus points if it’s headless)
5. Your nanny lighting a candle for you will sort everything out
6. You were shitting yourself before your first confession trying to think of a sin you might have committed before the age of 7
7. You either spent ages picking out your confo name or couldn’t be arsed and just picked the name of a relative there is no in between
8. Likewise if you have a middle name it’s probably the same as your godparents name
9. When you hear someone say ‘may the force be with you’ you’re immediate response is ‘ and also with you’
10. You’re never going to get used to the changes they made to mass that catch you out the 2 times you go every year.
If this isn’t enough to go on for ya, I would suggest watching the episode of Derry Girls where they discuss the differences between Catholics and Protestants because it’s pretty accurate.
