Jameson Black Barrel Selects has partnered with acclaimed Irish photographer Eoin Greally for an exclusive limited-edition run of prints, commissioned as part of Jameson Black Barrel Selects, a new series spotlighting Irish artists and some of Ireland’s top venues.
This week OnlyMassive editor Melissa Carton spoke to artist Eoin Greally about his latest collection and what inspires his work.

Can you tell us a bit about your journey into art? / What first inspired you to start creating?
I’ve worked as a photographer professionally since I was about 18 but I’ve only really thought of myself as an artist in recent years. I was so interested in fashion as a young child and as I got older, I always wanted to figure out a way that I could work in the fashion industry. I used photography as my ticket into that world and ironically the more I fell in love with taking photos and creating art, the less interest I had in fashion. So, my journey to becoming an artist sort of us was an accident!
Who were your earliest influences or mentors?
I’ve had lots of amazing influences on my work. I’ve always had a family who supported my want to create even if they didn’t understand. However, the first person I remember really understanding my work (maybe even before I did) was my secondary
How would you describe your style?
I think my favourite photos always have a tenderness and warmth to them. I love portraits that make you feel like it was taken by the subject’s friend or someone they know and trust. That’s how I want my photos to be described as.
Are there specific materials or techniques you’re drawn to?
Most of my personal work is shot on 35mm or medium format film! I try to shoot as much of my work as possible that way because it’s such a different experience. You learn how to trust your eye so much more not being able to see every photo you take on the back of a screen.

What themes or messages do you try to explore in your work?
I think this is something that will always grow and change as I do as a person but for now the themes that are the most important for me to explore are all around my identity as someone from rural Ireland, as a queer person and everything that comes undet those two umbrellas really!
Where do you usually find inspiration — music, books, people, places?
So many places but people are definitely the main source. I know when I go home to Galway to see my Mam and Dad that I will always leave feeling inspired. No one makes me feel more creative than them. Has your art helped you through any challenges in your life? It totally has helped me to understand who I am and what my real passions and dreams are. I have realized so much about myself by taking photos with my family. It’s my favourite thing to do in the world.
What’s the most vulnerable piece you’ve ever created?
My project “Home home” for sure. What has been your proudest moment as an artist so far? Two things come to mind! Exhibiting ‘Home home’ at Drop Everything on Inis Oirr in 2022 and also being commissioned to take photos in my style of Kate Moss in her home for Self Service Magazine.
What advice would you give to emerging artists?
Always ask for what you want but nicely! The right people will always want to help.
Jameson Black Barrel Selects is built on a simple but powerful concept: artists from one Irish city selecting the best of their city – from food to pubs to cultural spaces – and even curating the support acts that join them on the night. This initiative offers a unique and personal insight into the creative heart of each city through the eyes of its artists.
